The Farafenni HDSS follows over 16,000 individual residents of Farafenni town and its satellite villages, situated in the North Bank region of The Gambia. The surveillance system was originally established in October 1981 to evaluate the impact of a primary health care programme on morbidity and mortality, with two clusters of villages and hamlets to the east and west of Farafenni town included. The surveillance area has since expanded to include Farafenni town and its satellite villages, with over 50,000 individual inhabitants included in the study as of 31 December 2012.
