The FMC is a biobank comprising virtually the entire population of Finnish females who have been pregnant since 1983. At the 12th week of pregnancy, all women in Finland are offered screening for congenital infections; residual serum samples from these screenings are stored in the FMC with an opt-out principle. As of 2016 the FMC comprised serum samples from around one million women, with serial samples available for about 50% of women due to multiple pregnancies. In addition, as of 2016 there were around 100,000 pairs of mothers and daughters who both donated sera to the FMC. The biobank is linkable with population-based health registers including the Finnish Cancer Registry and Medical Birth Register.
