G1219 aimed to examine the interplay between genes and the environment on the development of anxiety and depression over time. It followed twin pairs and non-twin sibling pairs growing up in the United Kingdom, and their parents. Over 2,700 twins (1,381 pairs) were recruited through the Office of National Statistics, and 1,747 siblings (445 pairs) were offspring of participants who took part in a large study of depression called GENESiS. All participants were aged between 12 and 19 years years at the first wave of data collection, and since then, four further waves of data collection occurred.
