This study aimed to examine the outcomes of patients who underwent general surgery and examine the risk of nosocomial infections. Participants included almost 3,000 patients who attended the Department of General Surgery in a hospital in Jaén, Spain, during two periods: from November 1992 to June 1994 and from December 1995 to January 1997. Participants were followed up consistently, including a week after discharge and after 30 days, with a median follow-up period of around 6 years, with over 2,800 patients participating in the final follow-up.
