GHS is designed to investigate the risk and protective factors for the development of cardiovascular, eye, metabolic and immune system diseases. Between 2007 and 2012, GHS recruited participants aged 35 to 74 years from the city of Mainz and the Mainz-Bingen district in Germany. Over 15,000 participants have completed the baseline data collection sweep. Participants complete an in-person examination or telephone interview at baseline, 2.5 years, 5 years, 10 years and 15 years.
