The GCS evaluates the environmental and genetic risk factors for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in Golestan Province, Iran. From 2004 to 2008, the study recruited just over 50,000 adults between the ages of 40 to 75 years. All participants have been followed up actively every 12 months. At baseline, out of 50,045 participants, 28,804 of these were women. Three types of outcomes are assessed in the GCS: death (from any cause), occurrence of any cancer (of any site), and occurrence of a UGI cancer (oesophageal or gastric cancer).
