The GSMS is a longitudinal assessment of the development of psychiatric and substance abuse disorders and access to mental health care in a representative sample of 1,400 children and adolescents living in the southeastern United States. Participants were recruited from eleven contingent counties in the southern Appalachian mountain region of North Carolina. Three cohorts, aged 9, 11, and 13, with sample sizes of 508, 497, and 415, respectively, were recruited in 1993. Annual assessments were completed with the child and the primary caregiver until age 16 and then with the participant again at ages 19, 21, 24 to 26, and 30.
