GUSTO is a prospective, parent-offspring, birth cohort study following around 1,000 Singaporean children and their parents. 1,247 pregnant women aged 18 years and above, in their first trimester, were recruited from two major public maternity units in Singapore between 2009 and 2010. Expectant mothers were Singapore citizens or permanent residents, and of Chinese, Malay, or Indian ethnicity. Mothers receiving chemotherapy, psychotropic drugs or who had type I diabetes were excluded, and parents with mixed ethnic backgrounds were also excluded. 1,176 babies were born between 2009 and 2011, and have since been followed up regularly, along with their parents.
