Sample details

Children of women in the Nurses’ Health Study II (NHS II) were recruited into GUTS, another prospective cohort study. Children recruited in the first phase (GUTS I; N = 16,882) were aged 9 to 14 years at enrollment in 1996, while children recruited in the second phase (GUTS II; N = 10,923) were aged 9 to 16 years at enrollment in 2004. Of those invited, 68% of girls (N = 9,039) and 58% of boys (N = 7,843) returned a completed questionnaire. Participants were followed through questionnaires annually during 1996–2001 and then every 2-3 years through 2013. Beginning with the 2013 questionnaire cycle, the two cohorts were combined and are now followed together as the GUTS cohort. GUTS data also can be combined with NHS II data to look at intergenerational health effects, and GUTS participants now have children of their own, followed via the Fathers & Families sub-study.
