Sample details

The HAAS is an extension of the Honolulu Heart Program (HHP). The HHP began in 1965, including Japanese-American men who were born between 1900 and 1919 and living in Oahu, Hawaii, in the United States of America, and participants were assessed on three occasions between 1965 and 1974. The HAAS investigates the prevalence, risk factors, and neuropathologic abnormalities associated with cognitive decline and dementia. Established in 1991, the HAAS cohort comprised 3,734 participants of the HHP. Baseline assessments were conducted between 1991 and 1993 when participants were aged 71 to 93 years. Participants have been followed up every two to three years, and brain autopsies were conducted on HAAS cohort deaths until 2015. Participants were also followed up for mortality until 2014 as part of the Hawaii Lifespan and Healthspan Study.
