The Haramaya HDSS was established in 2018 in the Haramaya district of the East Hararghe Zone in the Region of Oromia, eastern Ethiopia. The cohort was established to be a comprehensive and sustainable data source for monitoring population health and demographic events in the Haramaya district. At baseline, the total number of households in the HDSS was 17,461, and the total baseline population was close to 100,000 (51,259 males and 48,639 females), of whom 23.86% were women of reproductive age. All households in the study area are visited and data are updated every 6 months.
