Harar Urban HDSS, part of the Hararghe Health and Demographic Surveillance System (Hararghe HDSS), is designed to monitor the social, demographic, and health changes of a population in eastern Ethiopia. The HDSS includes all residents of all ages of 12 of the 19 districts in Harar, the capital of the Harari People National Regional State. The HDSS includes individuals who migrate into the study area if they are residents for more than 180 days, and participants are removed from the study if they migrate out for more than 180 days. Children born to resident women are included regardless of where they are born. At baseline in 2011, the study included 32,437 residents. As of 2024, the Harar Urban HDSS population has expanded to over 53,000 across 26,805 households. Participants are followed up twice a year.
