Sample details

HAS was a birth cohort study that examined life course influences on healthy ageing. Participants were recruited by tracing ledgers containing records of 6,803 live singletons born in North Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, between 1920 and 1930. Over 1,400 traced individuals were alive and still resident in North Hertfordshire in 1994, and of these, over 800 agreed to a home interview when they were aged between 63 and 73 years. The participants were followed up again, around 9 years later between 2003 and 2005, when they were aged 72-83 years.
