HEALICS was set up to explore the association between various characteristics of acutely critically ill patients upon intensive care unit (ICU) admission and the observed disease severity. The study aimed to recruit 2,000 patients aged 18 years and above who are acutely admitted to the ICU due to acute or unexpected critical illness, either from the emergency department or the ward or transferred from an ICU (or a ward) from another hospital. Recruitment was planned across Drenthe, Friesland, and Groningen in the Netherlands. Follow-up data was planned for collection at 6 and 12 months following ICU discharge.
