The HOPE study is a prospective observational cohort study designed to investigate physical and mental health outcomes of young women living with HIV. Participants are enrolled at 12 clinical sites across 9 US states and Puerto Rico as part of one of four groups: (1) Nulliparous, non-pregnant participants 18-30 years of age, (2) Participants who are pregnant or recently gave birth (≤3 days) and are 18 to <40 years of age, (3) Postpartum (>3 days up to 12 months after delivery), non-pregnant participants 18 to <40 years of age, and (4) Parous, non-pregnant (>12 months after delivery) participants 18 to <40 years of age. The study aims to recruit a population that includes at least 15% women living with perinatally-acquired HIV (PHIV) in each of the four categories. As of January 2024, HOPE recruited just under 440 women aged 18-39 years of age, 34% of which had PHIV. Most recently, the study has recruited 744 women aged 18-45 years.
