The HBCS was established in 1995 to study the long-term health influences of early growth and living conditions. The cohort consists of over 13,000 participants born between 1934 and 1944 in Helsinki, Finland, at either the Helsinki University Hospital or Helsinki City Maternity Hospital. By 1971, a unique identification number was assigned to each member of the Finnish population, which allowed for identification of over 2,000 individuals from the original cohort to take part in a clinical study starting in 1995.

HBCS follows a large cohort of people in Helsinki, Finland, from birth in the early 20th century. Recruited participants were born at one of two hospitals in Helsinki between 1934 and 1944. At baseline, over 13,000 people were included in the cohort. Participants were followed up in person up to 11 times between birth and age 2. Between 1946 and 2000, participants were followed up through administrative databases. Between 2000 and 2018, participants were followed up via in-person measurements and questionnaires up to 4 times.
