The HKDR is a research-driven database that collects patient data to improve diabetes care and understand the causes and consequences of diabetes. The HKDR was established in 1995 by a team of doctors and nurses at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Prince of Wales Hospital. The registry's purpose of improving the quality of diabetes care and understanding the disease is achieved by collecting data on risk factors and complications. By 2009, the registry had accrued 2,616 clinical events in 9,588 Chinese type 2 diabetic patients with a follow-up duration of 6 years.
