The HLDS aims to examine the interrelationship of acculturation, family, personality, ecology, and peer domains measured in adolescence as they impact drug use later in life. Participants are students, recruited when aged 12 to 17 years in 11 schools in the East Harlem neighbourhood of New Yok City, United States of America. The sample included 695 African-American and 637 Puerto Rican adolescents at baseline assessment in 1990. Participants have been followed up every two to six years, with seven follow-ups complete as of 2016.
