The HPFS is a prospective longitudinal cohort study following the lifestyle and physical health of male health professionals in the United States since 1986. Over 50,000 males aged between 40 and 75 years old were recruited in 1986. This group consisted of approximately 30,000 dentists, 4,100 pharmacists, 3,700 optometrists, 2,200 osteopath physicians, 1,600 podiatrists, and 10,100 veterinarians. Among the study participants were over 500 African-Americans and almost 900 Asian-Americans. Participants have been followed-up every 2 years.
