The Hisayama Study is a population-based cohort study conducted in Hisayama town, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. The 1961 Cohort began in 1961 and included over 1,600 participants aged 40 or older from Hisayama town. Participants included approximately 75% of the town's residents aged 40 or older. Participants were followed every 1 to 2 years until 1974 and are now followed up every 5 years through health examinations and interviews, until death or until the end of the Hisayama study.
