Sample details

The IHDS was conducted in all states and union territories of India (with the exception of Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep). There are two panels of the IHDS (IHDS 1 and IHDS 2). IHDS 1 was conducted in 2005 and 2006, and IHDS 2 in 2011 and 2012. The IHDS 1 aimed to re-interview about half of the rural households that had been in the earlier Human Development Profile of India (HDPI) in 1994 and 1995, and consisted of over 40,000 households in more than a thousand villages and urban neighbourhoods across India. The second round of IHDS, known as the IHDS 2, was collected in 2011 and 2012, and includes an 85% re-interview rate of continuing families. A third round (IHDS 3) was expected for 2023.
