The IIDP is a prospective comparative study of cognitive ageing and dementia in two elderly, community-dwelling populations: African Americans living in Indianapolis, USA; and Yoruba living in Ibadan, Nigeria. The project recruited over 8,000 participants at two different time points. In 1992, 2,212 African Americans and 2,494 Nigerians, aged 65 years or above were enrolled in the study. In 2001, each cohort was enriched with nearly 2,000 additional participants, aged 70 years or older. Participants have been followed-up every 2 to 3 years with up to 7 extensive neurological and physical evaluations per individual.
