The main objective of IMIAS is to increase knowledge of the effects of gender differences on mobility disability (prevalence, incidence, and recovery) in ageing and on the impact of potentially modifiable risk factors. IMIAS is a population-based, longitudinal, prospective, multicentre, multidisciplinary cohort study conducted in five cities: Tirana (Albania), Natal (Brazil), Manizales (Colombia), Kingston (Ontario, Canada), and Saint-Hyacinthe (Quebec, Canada). Study participants include over 2,000 community-dwelling men and women aged between 65 and 74 years at baseline. Participants were followed to establish the baseline prevalence and the 4-year incidence of and recovery from mobility disability.
