The IPHS comprises individuals who took part in municipal health checkups in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, in 1993. Factors considered for analysis included age, sex, body mass index, blood pressure, serum lipids, diabetes, antihypertensive and lipid-lowering drug use, and smoking and drinking habits. In this large cohort study, 32,989 men and 63,894 women, aged between 40 and 79 years, have been continually followed-up, and mortality has been monitored through death certificates.
