Iwate-KENCO investigates the prevalence and risk factors of cardiovascular disease in the adult population of Northeastern Japan. The study recruited participants from Ninohe City, Ichinohe Town, Karumai Town, Kunohe Village, Yamada Town, Miyako City, Iwaizumi Town, Tanohata Village, Kuji City, Fudai Village, Noda Village, and Hirono Town municipalities of Iwate prefecture in Northern Japan. Recruited participants were community-dwelling adults aged at least 18 years. At baseline, over 26,000 participants were included in the cohort, approximately 65% of whom were women. Over 94% of baseline participants were 40 years and older. Participants were followed up routinely using health insurance data until December 2014.
