Sample details

The IWHS aimed to determine whether diet, body fat distribution, and other risk factors were related to cancer incidence. In 1986, the study recruited over 40,000 postmenopausal women in Iowa, United States of America, aged 55 to 69 years. Exposure and lifestyle information were collected in a baseline mailed survey and five follow-up surveys in 1987, 1989, 1992, 1997, and 2004. Cancer incidence and mortality were ascertained since 1986 by linkage to external data until 2014.
