The JACS study was designed to mirror the Whitehall II study in England in its design to investigate the causes of social inequalities in health. JACS recruited participants working as civil servants of various grades, including but not limited to clerical workers, firefighters, professional workers, teachers and manual workers in western Japan in Takarazuka City, Hyogo Prefecture. At baseline the cohort consisted of over 4,900 participants.
