The Jamaican 1986 Birth Cohort Study is a birth cohort of over 10,000 babies born in Jamaica in September and October 1986, as well as their mothers. Data has been collected on the participants of the birth cohort and their mothers at several time points, whilst the mothers and cohort members' teachers have also acted as informants for the children. Mothers were first interviewed at birth by hospital or community midwives, with school registers later used to aid identification of eligible children in under-funded parishes. Several sub-studies were also included, such as a perinatal mortality study of perinatal deaths, and a maternal mortality study of all maternal deaths up to August 1987.
