JECS investigates the environmental factors affecting children's health and development in Japan. The study recruited participants from 15 areas in Japan, namely Hokkaido, Koshin, Miyagi, Toyama, Kyoto, Fukushima, Hyogo, Chiba, Tottori, Fukuoka, Kanagawa, Aichi, Osaka, Kochi and Southern Kyushu. Recruited participants were able to speak Japanese, resident in one of the 15 study areas, and expected to reside in Japan for the foreseeable future with an expected delivery date between August 2011 and August 2014. At baseline, over 100,000 pregnant women participated in the study resulting in over 100,000 babies. Over 51,000 male partners also provided information to study in prenatal data collection sweeps.
