The KA-HDSS was set up in April 2009 to provide important demographic and health-related indicators with international, national, and local policy importance. The study was conducted in Kilite-Awlaelo district, Tigray, Northern Ethiopia, across nine rural kebelles and one urban kebelle (the smallest administrative component in Ethiopia). In 2016, two further urban kebelles were added into the study area. At baseline, the KA-HDSS included over 65,000 individuals living in 14,455 households. Information on vital events is collected during home visits by trained data collectors every six months.
