The Karonga HDSS in northern Malawi has a sample of more than 35,000 individuals under continuous demographic surveillance since the completion of a baseline census between 2002 and 2004. Participants reside in the port village of Chilumba and the surroundings of Lake Malawi in the southern part of the Karonga District. As of 2011, 8,285 households comprising over 35,000 participants of all ages were included in Karonga HDSS. Of the individuals under observation, at the end of 2011, 48% were male, 18% were under 5 years of age, and 48% were under 15 years of age. In all, 47% of the population were aged between 15 and 59 years, and 5% were aged 60 years and above.
