The KEMRI/CDC HDSS follows approximately 220,000 individuals residing in rural areas of Siaya County, Kenya. The HDSS was set up in 2001 and 2002 within the districts of Asembo and Gem, Siaya County. In 2007, surveillance was expanded to include the Karemo Division of Siaya County, with this area being one of two sites in western Kenya participating in the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) network. In 2012, approximately 44.6% of the KEMRI/CDC HDSS population were aged under 15 years, and approximately 53% were female. The HDSS population is followed up every 4 months.
