The KIHD study aims to investigate risk factors for cardiovascular, metabolic, and other non-communicable diseases in eastern Finland, an area with a high occurrence of cardiovascular disease. The baseline examinations were carried out from 1984 to 1989 and included over 2,600 randomly chosen middle-aged men, specifically, 42, 48, 54, and 60 years of age. Three more examinations were conducted 4, 11, and 20 years after the baseline examinations and the last two of them also involved 920 postmenopausal women aged 53 to 73 years. Participants have been followed up through linked mortality and healthcare data and the study is ongoing as of 2025.
