The KHDSS is a community-based study of over 198,000 residents in Kilifi District, Kenya. The study area was selected to capture the majority of patients admitted to Kilifi District Hospital, with data linked to morbidity and mortality surveillance at the hospital. Following mapping of the area, this was subdivided into enumeration zones, with households subsequently visited and informed about the continuous demographic surveillance system.
