KHDSS is designed to research diseases of national and international public health importance. The surveillance system includes all residents of the Kintampo North Municipality and Kintampo South District in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. To be included in KHDSS, individuals must reside in the study area for at least three calendar months. In 2005, KHDSS included over 116,000 individuals of various ethnic groups including Bono, Mo, Ewe, Dangbe and more. In 2010, the study expanded to include the Ahafo Mining Area in Tano North and the Asutifi Districts of the Ghana Gold mining concession area. As of 2020, the study has expanded to include over 456,000 participants.
