The Komo-Ise study included 12,630 middle-aged and elderly community residents. The original goal of the study was to examine the relationship between lifestyle and sociodemographic risk factors and mortality. Subjects in the Komo-Ise study were men and women aged between 40 and 69 years living in the village of Komochi, Japan, and the downtown area of the city of Isesaki, Japan, who were identified based on the municipal resident registration file in 1993. The baseline survey was conducted in 1993 and completed by over 11,500 participants, and the second wave survey was conducted in 2000 and completed by 9,650 participants.
