The KoGES Twin and Family Study was launched to elucidate the roles of genes, environments, and genetic-environmental interactions in common complex diseases and traits. Based on an existing nationwide twin registry, letters were mailed to twin families to recruit identical twins, mainly aged 20 years and older, and their families. Both co-twins (as a pair) or both twins and their first-degree relatives were included in the study. Second-degree relatives of the twins were allowed to participate for extended families, and spouses were included when the twin’s offspring participated in the study. From 2005 to 2013, over 3,000 individuals, consisting of twins and their families, were recruited. A total of 675 twin families participated in the baseline study. The average age of participants at baseline was 43.96 years, and 58.9% were female.
