The LBLS was created in 1978 to obtain normative data for the Schaie-Thurston Adult Mental Abilities Test (STAMAT). From 1994 to 2003, it was extended to identify psychometric correlates of cognitive change in healthy adults as they age. The study was conducted in Long Beach and Orange County, California, and participants were mainly recruited from clients of a local health insurance firm. Participants were divided into three panels. The first panel, sampled in 1978, included 65 adults aged 28 to 33 and 518 adults aged 55 to 84. Follow-ups for this panel occurred in 1981, 1994-1995, 1997, and 2000-2002. The second panel, added in 1994, comprised around 600 participants aged 30-97. Follow-ups for this panel took place in 1997, 2000-2002, and 2003. The third panel, recruited from 2000 to 2002, included around 900 participants aged 30 to 98, and it was followed up in 2003.
