This study investigated the learning behaviour and related brain activity underlying dysfunctional alcohol consumption in a community sample of around 200 healthy social drinking young adults. The participants were recruited from random population samples of 18-year-old men who were identified by resident registration offices in the German cities of Dresden and Berlin and who reported regular alcohol intake. The participants were assessed at age 18 with a variety of self-report, behavioural, and neuroimaging measures, and then followed up annually for 6 years until age 24.
