Lifelines is a large population-based cohort study and biobank that includes over 167,000 participants from the northern population of the Netherlands, with the aim to follow up for at least 30 years. Between 2006 and 2013, participants aged 0 to 93 years were enrolled using a three-generation recruitment design. At baseline, the cohort was 58% female, and the mean age was 41 years. Participants are followed up every 1.5-2.5 years with questionnaires, and every 5 years with physical examinations and biosample collection.
