The LNS is an open cohort of over 900 adult residents of Likoma, a small exclaved island in Lake Malawi, belonging to Malawi. Participants were identified from a census of the island's population before being invited to an interview. During the first round of data collection, only seven of the island's villages were included. Moreover, individuals aged between 18 and 35 years were contacted, with older spouses of respondents also contacted. During the second round of data collection, the study was extended to other villages of the island, and the age range of eligibility was increased to 18 to 49 years.
