Between May 2013 and March 2014, adult women were recruited at parturition at the Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Daxin county, China. Upon enrolment, a hair sample and non-fasting blood sample were collected. The final cohort consisted of almost 400 mothers who gave birth at the Maternal and Child Health Hospital and provided informed consent. During their hospital stay, mothers completed a questionnaire. At the 12-month visit, parents or caregivers provided information on breastfeeding duration and the child's general health. The primary outcome measure was children's cognitive and psychomotor abilities.
