The LSADT aimed to understand the causes of variations in survival, health, diseases, ability loss and cognitive functions among the elderly and the oldest-old. Participants were twins aged 70 years and older, recruited from registries in Denmark. In total, 4,700 individual twins, including more than 1,000 twin pairs, completed the baseline assessments, beginning in 1995. Assessments were conducted every 2 years until 2007, and new participants were added in 1997, 1999, and 2001. Participants were also followed up passively with linked healthcare and mortality data.
