The Marshfield Epidemiologic Study Area (MESA) was developed in 1991 to facilitate population-based medical research. MESA is a geographic region defined by zip codes where the majority of residents receive medical care at Marshfield Clinic Health System, its regional centers, and affiliated hospitals, in northern and central Wisconsin, United States of America. The cohort has grown to include over 185,000 individuals, who are followed up through linked databases and periodic quality control surveys. Linked databases contain information from as early as 1960. In 1998, a cohort of over 5,400 farm residents within MESA was created to study the unique characteristics of farm-related injuries and conditions. This MESA Farm Cohort is passively followed up, and farming exposures are actively collected on a per-project basis.
