The MASC study investigated the relationship between Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and menopause on bone density in a population of women in South Africa. Between 2011 and 2014, the study recruited over 1,000 women who were positive or negative for HIV, and were caregivers of participants from the Birth to Twenty Plus cohort, aged 40 to 60 years, in Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa. A subsample of participants was followed up with between 2017 and 2018.
