Mbita HDSS conducts population-based research on associations between diseases and socio-economic and environmental factors in Kenya. The study site comprises Rusinga East, Rusinga West, Gembe West, Gembe East, Takawiri Island and Kibuogi Island, located in and around Lake Victoria in Homa Bay County in Kenya. The HDSS includes all residents of households within the study site regardless of age. Migrants are also included in the study if they reside within the study area for a substantial period. As of 2013, the study included over 54,000 participants in 11,576 households. Participants are followed up every three months.
