This study follows the lives and mental health service use of around 400 older youth as they leave the foster care system in Missouri, United States. Participants aged 17, or nearing their 17th birthday were recruited from foster care services in eight Missouri counties. The eight counties included the six in and around St. Louis and two in southwest Missouri, added to make the sample more ethnically representative of youths in the state's foster care system. From December 2001 to May 2003, participants were interviewed every three months from age 17 to 19.
