The MHRN investigated the impact of comorbid mental illness on 30-day hospital readmission rates. Over 160,000 patients in 11 large healthcare systems, focusing on those hospitalized for heart failure (HF), acute myocardial infarction (AMI), or pneumonia were recruited between 2009 and 2011. A majority of the sample was male (53.1%), non-Hispanic white (62.1%), and over 65 years old (63.2%), and most had health care coverage through a Medicare Advantage product (67.0%).
