The Family Study was the final of four separate cardiorespiratory cohort studies that were carried out in Scotland, United Kingdom, in the 1960s and 1970s, known collectively as the Midspan studies. The cohort included adult offspring of couples who had taken part in a previous Midspan study, the Renfrew/Paisley study. In total, 2,338 offspring of 1,477 couples were recruited and completed baseline assessments in 1996, when they were aged between 30 and 59 years. The participants were subsequently followed up for around 15 years via linkage to morbidity and mortality registers.
