The study aimed to define the natural history, risk behaviours, and outcomes associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) over the life of the affected individual. Between 1979 and 1980, the study recruited and assessed 158 children diagnosed as hyperactive and 81 matched community control participants aged 4 to 12 years in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States of America. Participants were followed up between 1987 and 1988 when they were 12 to 20 years old, between 1992 and 1996 when they were 19 to 25 years old, and again when they were 25 to 32 years old.
